Pacem in Maribus conference

Thirtieth Pacem in Maribus was held in Kiev on 27-30 of October, 2003.

It was organized by the International Ocean Institute, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO and sponsored by Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, Regional Bureau for Science in Europe (ROSTE) UNESCO, WMO, EC, Globallast programme (IMO), UNDP/GEF, BSERP. The conference was also supported by national organizations, such as Ltd Carbon, Ltd Maritechnoservice, Ltd Marine technologies, Ltd Gess and K, Ukrrechflot, Donetsk Institute of Intellectual property, etc.

Two hundred fifteen professionals (scientists, managers, lawyers, representatives from governmental structures and NGOs) from 34 countries took part in this international forum.

President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Academician B.E. Paton, deputy of the Head of the National Commission for UNESCO Mrs. N.N. Zarudnaya, President of the International Ocean Institute Dr. Awni Behnam and Direcor of the Oceanological Center Academician V.N. Eremeev have made inaugural speeches during the Opening Ceremony.

Dr. I.M. Baysarovich has delivered Elisabeth Mann Borgese memorial public lecture. Arvid Pardo memorial public lecture was delivered by the Assistant Director General of UNESCO, Executive Secretary of IOC Prof. P Bernal.

The program of the Conference combined plenary lectures, working group sessions and poster session. Among the plenary lectures were highly qualified professionals, such as Prof. B. Cicin-Sain, Dr. P Matty, Prof. Busuttil, Dr. Kullenberg, Prof. Pararas-Carayanis, Prof. R Charlier, Dr. M. Gerges and Prof. J.Stel, that gave deep analysis of modern state and perspectives of Ocean governance and sustainable development of Ocean and coasts. Six working groups were working for two full days and were dedicated preparing recommendations on the following issues:
  • Emerging environmental issues and human heals. Safety and security of the human activities at sea.
  • Ocean and coastal protection and integrated management.
  • Living and non-living resources.
  • Problems of semi-closed and closed seas.
  • Climate change. Disaster preparedness.
  • Education and training in Ocean related field.

    Recommendations of working group sessions were formulated and discussed during the Joint session.

    Twenty eight posters were displayed for discussion during the breaks between working group sessions.

    Childrens art exhibition Kingdom of the World Ocean and exhibition of underwater photos were organized during the Conference in collaboration with organizers of festival of childrens art Underwater fantasy.

    Last day of PIM 2003 was dedicated for the Celebration of the Black Sea day. At the plenary session were given lectures related to the Black Sea environment, its problems and trends. Lectures were delivered by such well-know scientists as Prof. E. Ozhan, Dr. Yu.Zaitsev and Dr. G. Korotaev. Another part of the Black Sea celebration day was Award Ceremony that started from short speech of UNDIP/GEF, BSERP representative Dr. V. Pisotskij. Awards were given to the winners of Childrens art exhibition and to the young scientists for best oral and poster presentations.

    At the Official closing ceremony of the Conference Dr Awni Behnam presented Message to the Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts and Islands. Dr. Eremeev, Dr Awni Behnam and Dr Oliounine gave closing speeches indicating role of the Conference for international scientific and political co-cooperation and collaboration, for raising of public awareness on sustainable development issues.

    Conference Children and the Sea

    The youth ecological conference "Children and the sea" was held on 5-7th of May in Sevastopol. The main aim of this conference was to increase of ecological awareness of community and particularly youth. We had 65 participants from Ukraine and Russia. Among the organizers of the conference were IOI-Ukraine, Oceanological Centre, Ecological Centre, Junior Academy of Science. One of the most important outcomes of the round-table discussion, which was organized during the conference, was the establishment of the Youth Ecological Council. The objectives of work of the Youth Ecological Council will be improvement of interrelationship among public, science and decision makers, youth ecological education and increase of youth involvement in decision-making.

    Contest on best computer clip

    On 8th of June we have celebrated the World Ocean Day. The computer animation contest dedicated to this event has been organized. Computer films of 2-3 minutes length were presented to the attention of experts. Three of them received awards and will be used as ecological advertisement on TV.

    Co-operation with Junior Academy of Sciences

    Ecological trips
    On 30th of April ecological field trip to Nikita Botanical Garden has been organized for participants of Junior Academy of Science.

    Expedition to the Crimean Nature reservation.

    IOI-Ukraine has participated in preparation and organization the Youth scientific Conference Pontus Euxinicus that was held 23-25th of May, 2005.
